eBay's Fall Seller Update: Part 2 (Descriptions)

9/26/2016

eBay recently announced the details of their Fall 2016 Seller Update.  We will cover this update with a series of articles.  This article will focus on active content in listings' description.

The short of it is that eBay is disallowing use of active content in descriptions, a move towards simpler presentations to buyers...should the buyers even see that portion of the listing in the first place.

We whole-heartedly support this change if only to reinforce to sellers how important it is to recognize two colliding facts:
  1. Buyers rarely view the description in the first place
  2. Buyers are increasingly browsing and making purchases on their mobile phones.
In our opinion, sellers should minimize any investment in the description area.  Specifically sellers should be focusing on providing only those details that the rest of the listing may not provide.

See our article on eBay listing best practices for more detailed advice.  As well, take a look at our article on mobile considerations -- mobile is first, and should be your first consideration as well!

eBay's Fall Seller Update: Part 1 (Structured Data)

eBay recently announced the details of their Fall 2016 Seller Update.  We will cover this update with a series of articles.  This article will focus on structured data -- a topic we've covered previously.

With this release, eBay continues its march towards a more Amazon-like experience in terms of helping buyers more easily find and purchase products.  With structured data, eBay listings can be more easily indexed by search engines, including eBay's own search engine or external search engines such as Google.   And if products are easier to find, the sales will follow as well!

Prior to this current push, eBay's listings were hard for search engines to find.

The interesting change with this update is that eBay will now allow sellers to use other product identifiers, and specifically Amazon ASINs.  This new capability will be available in February, 2017.

And the even better news for CommerceESB users is that we continue to make it easy to include structured data as part of your eBay listings.  See our article on structured data best practices to review what should be done and how.
